The Hunt

  • Individual project
  • Board game
  • Timeframe: 2 months
  • 2013
  • Status: completed
The Hunt is a board game for two to three players which focuses on cooperation rather than competition. The goal is for all players reach the winning condition, which is specified in the rules. In the event that one player does not meet the winning condition all players will therefore lose.

The target audience of The Hunt is children of ages eight and older. The reasoning behind this is that children in this age group are starting to understand abstract subjects that this game touches upon; for example, migration, cooperation and death are themes that will come up during the game.

My goal for designing this game is to teach and let children experience how it is to cooperate with each other. This profile suits The Hunt well, as the players are given the choice to share their pawns and discuss the meta throughout certain points in the game, and the players are dependent on each other to realise the winning condition.

The course assessment of this project required that I deliver a professional and complete game design document based on a concept design document written by another student. I have analysed the game, extracted the weak points out of the core design and improved the game by examining the target audience closely. By adjusting the game to the target audience, I was able to create a more challenging and understandable game that is fun to play.

The choices I made for my end product were judged in a one-on-one assessment with the lecturer. The final result, and the choices I made, were praised by the lecturer after a judgement in an assessment.
Learning Points
  • Taking and showing responsibility for the development and quality of the product
  • Adjusting the game to the cognitive abilities and limitations of the target audience
  • Coming up with, developing, iterating and documenting the gameplay
  • Being able to justify choices I made concerning the design and development of the game
